Today's News: Politics, Tech and F1 :)

Politics
1. NY-26 U.S. House race:
Hochul (the Democrat) beat Corwin (the Republican) by approximately 6 points despite the NY-26 House seat having gone to a Republican in the last five elections with an average margin of over 25% in favor of the Republican candidate. In fact, one of those five recent elections was won by the Republican with more than a 51% SPREAD! Republicans are eager to use the 3rd-party candidate as a scapegoat but Corwin was on the record as supporting the Paul Ryan budget that would eviscerate Medicare and Hochul used that to her advantage in the campaign. Republicans are in a weird position of having established the Ryan plan as a litmus test for primary candidates but the position (moving Medicare from a guaranteed benefits program to a voucher "good luck with that" program) is untenable in a general election with the elderly, moderates and progressives. Republicans are already starting to back away from the poisonous issue (Ryan is saying he wants to move past it and on to other solutions and two Republican Senators have already voiced opposition to the plan). Every Republican who supports/supported the plan will have to explain that support. Good luck with that.

2. John Edwards:
The DOJ has apparently given prosecutors the green light to pursuit charges against John Edwards (a former Democratic candidate for President) for violating campaign finance laws, some of which involved payments to his mistress.

Tech
1. Windows Phone 7(.1):
Windows unveiled their "Mango" update. It basically brings a bunch of features that are already available in Android and iOS although other features such as tethering are left out. The update is due to drop this autumn with Nokia's first Windows Phone 7 handset due to run Mango.
-Does anyone know anyone who uses/loves WP7? I didn't think so...

2. iOS 5 rumored to drop support for iPhone 3GS:
It should come as no surprise that Apple is rumored to be dropping support for a two-year old handset when iOS 5 is released in the coming months. The iPhone 3GS has an outdated screen and processor. The truth is that making iOS 5 compatible with the 3GS is probably more trouble than it's worth for Apple. The iPhone "4S" will be out in a few months and will make the regular "4" seem slow (which the iPad 2 already accomplishes) so I can't imagine them trying to tailor a heavily updated OS to such an old device.

3. Meego:
Meego announced the latest developments at the Meego Conference this week. Over a year has elapsed since it was announced that Maemo and Moblin would be integrated and we still don't have consumer (or even really developer kit) hardware. The N9 is rumored to run Meego on impressive and well-built hardware but the pace of development is creating a tech equivalent of blue balls and I think many enthusiasts are losing patience! iOS, Android, WP7 and even Blackberry continue to evolve and the Meego group needs to release soon and keep updating to catch up.

F1
1. Monaco:
A truck caught fire at Ste. Devote (aka: Turn 1) in Monaco and repairs were quickly commenced. It is possible that this resurfacing will cause grip issues when the drivers arrive at the first turn. First practice is due to take place on Thursday morning!

2. Kubica to possibly return to practice sessions:
Renault have penciled in Robert Kubica for a Friday practice session(s) for the end of the season, although they have effectively ruled out the prospect of him racing this season. Kubica was injured in a WRC accident during last year's off season but his rehabilitation has progressed very well and it appears as though he may return to F1. Running in practice sessions could lead to a return for next season. GET WELL ROBERT!

3. FIA reprimands:
The FIA is on the verge of formally approving a rule that would award drivers a 5-place penalty drop if they incur three "reprimands" (such as those who did not sufficiently slow for yellow flags in Barcelona last weekend). At least two of the three would have to be "driving" reprimands (as opposed to failing to weigh in properly, etc...).
